MARKED GRAVESTONE

The farmers Pranas and Zosė Kaspėraitis lived in the village of Imbarė near the town of Salantai, Kretinga County, with their grown son Pranas and two young daughters Agnė and Nastė. Shortly after the German occupation, all the Jews of Salantai were assembled in the synagogue, in July 1941. The men were taken out in groups of 10 and shot, and about 150 young women were sent to work for the local farmers. A month later, the farmers were ordered to return the women to town. One day in September, their guards told them they were being sent somewhere else to work. One of the young women, Batya Abelman, decided to flee, and found her way back to the house of the farmer where she had worked in July. Pranas Kaspėraitis was a pious man and had treated her very kindly. He welcomed her into his home, and he and his wife, Zosė, took care of all her needs. One day in 1942, someone asked Pranas Kaspėraitis to shelter Moshe Verzbolovsky, also from Salantai, for one night. He had been hiding elsewhere until then, and his hiding place was no longer safe. Kaspėraitis decided to offer him permanent shelter, instead. Abelman and Verzbolovsky remained with the Kaspėraitis family until the liberation of the area from German occupation. In hiding the Jews, they were taking a great risk because their neighbors were hostile to Jews. Shortly after the war, the Soviet authorities accused the Kaspėraitises of collaborating with the Germans, and they were exiled to Siberia. Batya, by then Jankelevich, whose life had been saved thanks to the Kaspėraitises’ rescue efforts, went to great lengths to prove to the Soviets that they were innocent, and they were finally released. In the course of time both rescued immigrated to Israel.
