MARKED GRAVESTONE ANTKAPIS

Most of the Jews in the town of Daujėnai (Biržai District, Panevėžys County), Lithuania, where Rachel Rosenberg (b. 1925) grew up, were killed in a German Aktion (mass execution) in 1943. The remaining 25 Jewish families were kept alive for another couple of months until they were murdered as well. Rachel and her mother managed to escape the Germans, but soon afterward they were apprehended and jailed, along with another woman. The night before they were to be killed, they were spotted by a sympathetic local man, Povilas Tamosiunas (recognized on November 30, 2011 as Righteous Among the Nations), who, taking advantage of the guards abandoning their post, helped them escape. Rachel’s mother, having lost the will to live, did not flee, and she was indeed murdered shortly thereafter.
Rachel kept to the edges of local farms, living off the kindness of farmers. Though they feared taking her in for an extended period, they helped when they could. But Rachel required a more permanent solution, and she found one with the intervention of Feliksas Ereminas, a priest in the nearby town of Subačius. In addition to refuge in the monastery, he gave her forged papers bearing the name of a girl her age who had passed away. The girl’s name was Regina, and she adopted this name even after the war. Ereminas treated her like a daughter and arranged for her safety until the war’s end.
Following the liberation, Regina settled in Wilno (Today Vilnius), where she married, raised two daughters, and worked as a midwife. The elder daughter remembers that growing up in Wilno, Ereminas would visit them, and they would visit him. She hadn’t understood the reason at the time, but he was considered an honored family friend.
