On the eve of the German invasion of Lithuania, the economist Jackus Sondeckis was mayor of the town of Šiauliai and one of the leading activists of the Lithuanian Social-Democratic party. He was friendly with the Jewish lawyer, Samuelis Petuchauskas, his former deputy mayor in the municipality, and he also knew his wife, Marija, very well. In 1941, the Petuchauskas family moved to Wilno (Vilnius), and when the Germans occupied that town, Petuchauskas was murdered in July 1941, with 300 other Jews. In 1943, Marija and their 11-year-old son, Markas, managed to flee the ghetto with the help of friends from Šiauliai. At that point, Sondeckis learned that Petuchauskas had been murdered and that his widow and son had fled the ghetto, and he began seeking ways to save them. He met with Marija in Šiauliai and offered her shelter at his farm in the village of Šašaičiai, where his sister, Eugenija Kazlauskienė, lived with her husband, Juozas. The two Jews stayed on Sondeckis’s farm until the end of the German occupation, and were warmly received and well treated by the Kazlauskases. In times of imminent danger, the Kazlauskases were warned by their friends who served in the Lithuanian police, and they then moved the Jews in their care to an another shelter, until the danger passed. After the war, Sondeckis moved to the United States.
